Frequently Asked Questions

Here are several common questions related to WOW Safaris you may be curious about. If you have your own question, please contact Lois and we'll add your question to the list.

What is the weather like?

Warm but not sweaty. January in Kenya is like July in this hemisphere. Nairobi is situated at about 6,000 feet altitude, so it is delightful in the evening, however it is always a good idea to have a warm sweater and a rain-proof jacket, particularly for the early morning game drives in Maasai Mara.

You will not need to bring towels or sleeping bags. The guest houses at the college are like bed and breakfasts, and the hotels and lodges are wonderful and fully stocked.

Is the water ok to drink?

Tap water is not suitable for consumption. However, like much of the world, bottled water is readily available and we will have lots of bottled water with us on our travels.

What shots and vaccinations do I need to get?

No shots are "required" to travel to Kenya. However, you are advised to get inoculations for tetanus, Yellow Fever and typhoid, and are strongly advised to take a Malaria prophylactic.

Helpful information on traveling to Kenya is available from the World Health Organization at this website.

Will my luggage be checked straight through from my embarking airport all the way to Kenya?

Yes, once you check your luggage in at the start of your journey, you will not see it until you arrive in Nairobi. Please check with your airline one week prior to departure regarding luggage weight allowances, as these are in constant flux due to economic and security factors. Also ensure you are abiding by their luggage restrictions.

What will accommodations be like when we are in country?

Normally, you will be staying two to a room. If you wish to stay by yourself, there will be a slight surcharge--please let me know in advance if you wish to do this.

Is it ok to take pictures of the local people?

Yes, in fact many of them love to have their photograph taken. Sometimes members of certain ethnic groups, such as the Maasai, are reticent about having their photo taken, so just be sure to ask prior to taking their picture.

How do I apply for a visa to visit Kenya?

The easiest way to get a visa to Kenya is to purchase it in the airport when you arrive for $50 U.S. It takes a few minutes upon arrival, but is much simpler and saves time and effort on this side of the ocean. If your group is travelling to Zanzibar, you will need to buy an additional $50 visa for travel there (it is part of the country of Tanzania).

Again please feel free to contact Lois if your question is not answered here.
